Waikīkī Community Center: A Hub for All Generations

Residents often overlook that Waikīkī is more than just a tourist destination; it has been home to the Waikīkī Community Center for almost five decades. This center focuses on enhancing the lives of its community members with a range of programs.
In the center’s auditorium, a group of older adults participates in a ‘yoga-lates’ class, combining elements of yoga and Pilates. Throughout the facility, various posters showcase activities such as crafting garlic jars, making fabric bird decorations, and creating living moss wall art. Local wildlife murals brighten the area, particularly near the center’s free charter preschool.
According to President Caroline Hayashi, the center prioritizes its three core groups: kūpuna, keiki, and the wider community. She points out the need for spaces where individuals can engage in person, estimating that roughly 20,000 visitors come to the center annually, largely from Waikīkī’s older demographic. A notable benefit for attendees is the availability of free parking.
