Reflections on a Changing Driver’s License

My driver’s license is nearing its expiration, and soon I will have to relinquish the colorful rainbow design for a more subdued and debated pastel version. While I’m not fond of the new look, many locals feel deeply offended by it.

Owning one of the most beautiful IDs in the nation was a point of pride for many, especially when showing it off to friends who had to swap their vibrant cards for something less striking. After the new design was unveiled, there was substantial backlash, with over 6,000 individuals signing a petition urging the state to revisit its decision. Comments reflected strong sentiments, such as: “One big middle finger to all of us living in Hawaii.” Despite the dissatisfaction, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi has not changed course, and we will have to live with the simpler design.
