HONOLULU (Hawaii News Now) – The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) is advocating for further financial support to mend approximately $100 million worth of storm-related damages. Deputy Superintendent Tammi Oyadomari-Chun reported that storms this year resulted in $198 million in damages and triggered nearly 400 maintenance requests during a presentation to the Board of Education.
HIDOE has already secured $50 million for repair efforts, yet additional resources are necessary to tackle the outstanding damages. Oyadomari-Chun stated, “We acknowledge that we really want them fixed,” emphasizing ongoing collaboration with the governor and the legislature to obtain more funding. She noted that over $100 million in damage remains from the Kona low weather system, which is still in the process of being addressed.
