HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaiian Electric has submitted a request for approval to acquire electricity from a renewable energy initiative designed to promote Hawaii’s clean energy objectives while ensuring reliable electric service. This project plans to contribute 20 megawatts of solar power generation and 80 megawatt-hours of battery energy storage to the electric grid in Maui.
The company has filed an application with the Public Utilities Commission for a 20-year fixed-price power purchase agreement (PPA) with Pulehu Solar, which is anticipated to generate enough clean energy to serve nearly 10,000 households in Maui each year. Brendan Bailey, Hawaiian Electric’s vice president of resource procurement, indicated that the project would introduce an additional local renewable energy source to the grid and help mitigate the impact of fluctuating imported fuel prices.
