Hawaii faith leaders rally against immigration enforcement

Nearly 40 faith leaders and community members assembled outside the Federal Detention Center in Honolulu, voicing their opposition to heightened immigration enforcement and advocating for fair treatment of immigrants. The event featured a diverse group spanning various religions, including Buddhists, Unitarians, Episcopalians, Jews, and atheists.

Fr. David Gierlach, vicar of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, stated that the rally was prompted by the news of a significant increase in ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) operations. Attendees, like former Waipahu High School teacher Philip Riley, highlighted the broader implications of the immigration discourse and the importance of recognizing the contributions of immigrants throughout U.S. history. Additionally, Pastor Ongo Koli shared personal accounts of individuals being detained at Hawaii airports upon arrival and encouraged participation in the upcoming November 3rd general election to push for policy change.
