Hawaii gets federal disaster funding after Hurricanes Lala and Lowell

Hawaii has been granted federal disaster recovery funding in the wake of Hurricanes Lala and Lowell, as announced by Governor Josh Green on Thursday, following the approval of two major disaster declarations by President Donald Trump. These declarations allow for funding through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist in covering eligible recovery costs in various counties affected by the hurricanes.

Specifically, the funding will cover costs in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Maui counties due to Hurricane Lala, and Kauai and Maui counties for Hurricane Lowell. FEMA is set to reimburse a significant portion of eligible costs, while the state and local counties will be responsible for the remainder. Green expressed gratitude for the approvals, indicating a 75%-25% cost-sharing arrangement. The funding will support various recovery efforts, including National Guard deployments, debris removal, and repairs to public infrastructure. Additionally, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency will coordinate with counties to document and submit recovery costs to FEMA. While recovery efforts are underway, officials are also emphasizing the ongoing risk of tropical cyclones during this hurricane season and a forecast of a drier winter, raising concerns about potential wildfire hazards.
