We Tried It: North Shore Huaka‘i Shuttle to Support Local Businesses

The North Shore Huaka‘i, a pilot shuttle program designed to support local businesses, received a positive response during its initial 90-day run, prompting an extension. Originally set to conclude in September, the service will now be operational at Ko Olina throughout October and Waikīkī until the end of the year. Fares have also increased from $5 to $10.

This shuttle service, crucial for revitalizing areas affected by the Kona low storms, operates daily, picking up passengers in Waikīkī and Ko Olina for trips to Waialua and Hale‘iwa. Passengers must provide proof of purchasing from local businesses to ensure their return ride. According to Dee Matsuura from the Hawaiian Council, this initiative significantly aids local enterprises by bringing visitors without adding traffic woes.
