HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A settlement has been finalized for a father and son who brought forth a lawsuit against the City of Honolulu and multiple unnamed police officers, alleging police brutality. This incident stemmed from a New Year’s Day manhunt on January 1, 2024, during which the two men, claiming to be innocent bystanders, found themselves caught up in the police operation on University Avenue.
Honolulu taxpayers will be responsible for the nearly $2 million settlement, which was approved by the City Council. The men assert that Tevita Cadiente, 25, faced aggressive treatment from the Honolulu Police Department, including being rammed against a fence by a police vehicle and subsequently beaten by officers who mistook him for a suspect. Meanwhile, his father, 49-year-old Vaokehekehe Mataele, was handcuffed and restrained on the pavement during the ordeal.
