HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Over the weekend, thirty-four trees were planted at an undeveloped park in ‘Aiea, marking the initial phase of the project aimed at revitalizing the old sugar mill site. This initiative took place at Halewikio Place as a collaborative effort among various public, private, nonprofit, and government entities.
Part of the Ke Ola O ‘Aiea ‘Ohana Park, the tree planting signifies the start of the ‘Aiea Community Association’s efforts to create a green space for the local community. Myles Ritchie, a programs director at the Outdoor Circle, emphasized the significance of this transformation and its potential to include further enhancements like a community center. According to Claire Tamamoto, president of the ‘Aiea Community Association, the project has deep historical roots, acknowledging the contributions of those who came before. The city’s Division of Urban Forestry facilitated the planting through a generous grant, and a variety of trees were included in this effort.
